چکیده

The L’Aquila earthquake of magnitude 5.8 occurred on April 6, 2009 in the central Abruzzo region of Italy, causing widespread damage. More than 300 people lost their lives and property worth more than 2,500 million dollars was damaged. We analyze the high-resolution Synthetic Radar Aperture (SAR) imageries from TerraSAR-X along with high-resolution QuickBird optical images for the building damage detection of L’Aquila city center where the damage was mostly concentrated.

Detection of damage to building side-walls in the 2011 Tohoku, Japan earthquake using high-resolution TerraSAR-X images [8892-37]

Building damage such as to side-walls or mid-story collapse is often overlooked in vertical optical images. Hence, in order to observe such building damage modes, high-resolution SAR images are introduced considering the side-looking nature of SAR. In the 2011 Tohoku, Japan, earthquake, a large number of buildings were collapsed or severely damaged due to repeated tsunamis. One of the important...

Automatic Registration of High Resolution SAR and Optical Satellite Imagery in Urban Areas

The work presented in this thesis addresses the problem of registration of high resolution SAR and optical satellite imagery in dense urban areas. With the launch of high resolution remote sensing satellites in different modalities like TerraSAR-X, WorldView-1 and IKONOS-2, the contribution of remote sensing for various applications has received a tremendous boost. Specifically, the combined an...

Post-seismic infrastructure damage assessment using high-resolution SAR satellite data

The Wenchuan Earthquake on May 12, 2008, devastated a vast area in Sichuan, China. The swift rescue and disaster management measures of the Chinese government have been supported by radar remote sensing from the very beginning. The new high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites, like COSMO-SkyMed and TerraSAR-X, have been used for damage assessment and rapid mapping. Unfortunatel...

Experiences in Optical and Sar Imagery Analysis for Damage Assessment in The

The Sichuan Earthquake on the 12th of May 2008, and the extensive rescue operations following this tragic event, proved the value of high-resolution optical and radar remote sensing during the emergency response. Optical data provide a fast and simple way to value “at glance” damages while radar sensors can deliver images independent of weather conditions, day and night, and thus in principle c...

Earthquake-Induced Building Damage Detection with Post-Event Sub-Meter VHR TerraSAR-X Staring Spotlight Imagery

Compared with optical sensors, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) can provide important damage information due to its ability to map areas affected by earthquakes independently from weather conditions and solar illumination. In 2013, a new TerraSAR-X mode named staring spotlight (ST), whose azimuth resolution was improved to 0.24 m, was introduced for various applications. This data source made it ...
